An Education

Over the weekend, I watched An Education. Overall, I enjoyed it although the plot line is a bit disturbing. An older man and a 16 year old girl become involved in a romantic relationship. It’s an uncomfortable subject or at least I think so. I cannot imagine that me, as a 16 year old, would have ever gone out with someone in their 30’s. Nor, for that matter, would my mother ever allow it as Jenny’s (the main character) parents did. No matter how charismatic someone is, there’s something to be said when a grown man wishes to take out a high school girl.
Anyways, back to the movie itself. I thought Carey Mulligan was fantastic. She does a great job of playing a young woman, bored with life and then truly excited to be gaining so much experience. I’m also not the only one that thought so as she was nominated for Best Actress.
The directing and cinematography was nothing out of the ordinary although I did enjoy the wash he used when the couple traveled the Paris.
I would say if you are a fellow Netflix user, go ahead and add this to your queue. I’m not sure it deserved the Academy Award Best Picture nomination though…
